DESCRIPTION:  This magnificent example of Boulle support cabinetry was created by master cabinet maker, Mathieu Befort.  Its design contains important ornamentation of gilded bronzes with a stunning bronze effigy representing Apollo on the door.  Note the masks on the sides, the multiple molds in the belt following the lines of the furniture, and spandrels typical of Beforts style in the corners below. Very important caryatids and falls over the entire height of the cut sections.  A drawer is in the belt, and the plateau is in black Aleppo marble.  The mahogany interior has two shelves, while the exterior is beautiful ebonized pear wood.

This piece is both impressive and refined, carrying the mark of the house of Befort (BJ stands for Befort Jeune), on the high cross on each side. They were a family of prestigious cabinet makers famous for their work in the 19thCentury
